Getting an Expansion Pack

If you're a gameboard fanatic, like me, you probably have shelves full of board games. You most likely played every one of them and will never get bored of it. Right? Then out of nowhere, while walking through the store, you see a shiny new expansion pack calling out to you like a siren. The expansions entice you to buy them. Then you enter in a four-year affair with the expansions while your other board games lie on your shelf unbeknownst of your betrayal. What? That's just me? Then forget about what I said, and let's focus on one important question. "Are expansion packs worth it?" The purpose of an expansion module is to add extra flavor to your original base game. Either the game includes more pieces or a whole new board. Whether it's a card game or party game, it is always exciting opening a new expansion, but the problem is most of the expansions can't be played by itself. Another issue is when you open an expansion box, you might expect a bunch of cool stuff, but you find yourself seeing a thin rulebook and a couple of colorful pieces falling out of the box. Inside your head, you might be thinking, "I spent 49 dollars for this! What the ****!".

Yes, it's frustrating, but those small pieces and extra rulebook could add whole new levels to your favorite board games. If you played Catan, you probably know of Catan's extensive expansion series like Seafarers or Cities and Knights. Catan itself is a fun game, but you need to realize that after thousands of games, it will eventually become dull. At this moment, the expansion comes barging right up to your face like showgirls in Las Vegas. They always bring excitement even if it's for a brief moment. In conclusion, there are pros and cons to buying an expansion. But, in the end, it's up to you. If you have a board game and want to put an extra zest to it, I recommend buying it. To buy which expansion, I can't say, because there are so many games out there that I don't have time to type each and every game into this post. My advice, go out and explore. You can look for it on a website such as Boardgamegeek, or you can watch reviews from awesome people like Dice Tower or Shut Up and Sit Down.
